The Beach Comber is a five-reel, 25-payline slot machine that uses a mix of hidden treasure and summertime fun thematic elements. The background is a pretty plain surf and sand vista, though we do like that most of the symbols in the game feature sand behind the artwork, which helps it to blend in to the overall environment.
The object of the game here is to match symbols from left to right across the reels. It starts with poker ranks from nines through kings, each of which can earn you some small rewards. Beach-themed items offer up bigger wins. These include sandcastles, sunscreen, coolers, hermit crabs, and even buoys.
The Happy Digger
The most important symbol in this game, however, is the beach bum himself, the man who has been searching for treasure this whole time. If you should happen to hit three of him anywhere on the reels, you’ll trigger the beachcombing special round, a feature that offers up some gameplay variety and the chance to win more cash in a few different ways.
This mini-game begins with you looking at the sand and a number of seashells dotting the screen. You’ll be able to choose four of these shells, each of which will reveal a different reward for you. Each pick will reveal an X, and only after you make all four choices will your prizes be shown to you.
The tourist character will walk over to each spot you’ve marked and find buried treasures. There might be cash or valuables, which will give you an instant credits prize. You could also find a treasure chest that awards a number of free games. Sadly, you could also come up with junk, which will provide absolutely nothing.
The free spins games are normal, with one exception: each time you find the man’s face on the reels, you’ll get an additional spin, allowing you to extend this feature. It’s not a big twist, but it is always nice to rack up more plays at no cost.
A Hidden Gem
We didn’t expect much out of The Beach Comber when we first played it, but we have to admit that we were pleasantly surprised after giving this game a test run. The theme is pleasant enough, but what really sold us on this slot is the beachcombing bonus round. It’s a lot of fun to dig through the sand and uncover treasures, and it broke up the otherwise straightforward gameplay in a fun and thematic way. If you’re looking for a title that’s not too difficult to understand but still has an interesting bonus round, give this machine a shot.
