The Egyptian ruler Cleopatra is not only one of the most famous women in all of history, she has also inspired countless forms of art over the course of thousands of years. Perhaps unsurprisingly, she has also been the subject of more than a few slot machines, including some of the most famous ones in the world of online gambling.
The one we’ll be talking about here doesn’t quite rise to that level of recognition throughout the industry, but it is still definitely treading the same thematic waters. Cleopatra by Twinoplay is one of the simpler implementations of this theme, and it isn’t one that takes itself too seriously. But it is still filled with that same Ancient Egyptian flavor that has powered countless numbers of slots over the years.
A Trip Down the Nile
Cleopatra is a five-reel, nine-payline slot machine that is available at casinos powered by Twinoplay software. One look at the game will tell you that this is a cartoonish version of the classic Egyptian aesthetic: while the reels themselves feature papyrus with hieroglyphics printed on them, the symbols themselves are highly colorful, with all of the “characters” looking like they were made for a children’s show or Disney animated movie. That means plenty of detail, but nothing scary, and lots of big smiles on the many animals that grace the reels.
The object of the game is to match three or more of the same symbols from left-to-right across your paylines. Players have the ability to match a number of thematic icons, ranging from soldiers to sphinxes, cats, camels, alligators, and ancient religious figures. The longer your matches, the more you’ll win, and you can even take home a consolation prize for some of the highest-paying icons just for getting two in a row.
A couple of special symbols are also available on the reels. First, there is a snake that acts as the wild substitute. It can help make winning lines with any of the normal prize-winning symbols. However, it can also pay out itself: hit two or more in a row, and you’ll win a prize, up to 4,000 coins if you can manage to string together five in a row. There is also a scatter – a scarab – that will earn you a multiplier of your spin bet if you hit two or more on the reels.
Free Spins and Boat Races
As in many games, that scatter is also your first way to get into a bonus round. If you can hit three or more in a row, you’ll not only earn increasingly large prizes, you’ll also be awarded with some free plays. Three will earn you 10 spins, increasing up to a maximum of 40 free rounds if you hit five on the screen at once.
The other special feature is triggered by hitting three or more boat symbols. This will take you into a bonus round where you’ll be able to capture an instant prize. Four or more boats will increase your potential earnings, up to a 5x multiplier for five boats.
Basic Gameplay, But Still Enjoyable
With few bonus rounds and a limited number of paylines, this is not a game that is geared towards action junkies who want as much going on in a machine as possible. Instead, this is a game that has to live or die based on the strength of the theme.
On that regard, thankfully, Cleopatra delivers. We really liked the style that was chosen for the game, as it lightens up the mood and not only makes the display attractive, but does actively make the whole package a lot more fun to play. If you enjoy playing Egyptian-themed machines and aren’t too worried about whether or not your slots are particularly innovative or feature-filled – and especially if you like to let your inner child out from time to time – this game should fit the bill.
