The Legend of Olympus Slot Machine
There must have been 100’s of slots created with ancient legends as the theme – going all the way back to mechanical 3 reel games. This ancient Olympus themed slot by Rabcat takes a familiar genre and gives it an amazing 3D overhaul. The game is presided over by both Zeus, who looks down from the top left at the reels, and Loki in the bottom right. There is a free spins bonus game and a pick-em game where you try to get the boatman to take you over the river. Animations both inside the reels and outside really make the difference for this slot. When it comes to describing games, I reserve the word ‘excellent’ for the very best – and this one deserves it.
You’ll be familiar with a lot of the design elements and symbols for this game. Zeus’ big white beard and warrior-like stature is apparent, and Loki manages to look weasel-like and alien at the same time. On the reels are shields, spears and people guzzling goblets of wine. You’ll also find Thor and Freya – and of course the free spins and bonus symbols needed to keep the game interesting. When you win with Thor symbols a flame appears and Thor crashes down his hammer in front of the reels. Loki turns from above the spin button to watch the reels spin. This is just one of many details which make this slot a visual treat to play.
With a free spins game and a very dark, brooding pick-em game there is plenty to keep you entertained. I found plenty of smaller wins along the way, with this slot being medium volatility compared to the high-variance games which you will often find in the ancient legends type games.
Setup and Play for the Legend of Olympus
There are 20 win-lines in this game over a 5 reel by 3 row grid. If you keep the maximum lines then your spin costs are 20c through to $40 max. Auto-play is hidden as a tiny ‘A’ icon on the top left of this slot. You can gamble wins on the flip of a playing card if you wish.
Individual wins are small compared to many slots, though my experience was that these are frequent. The best paying regular symbols are Loki and Zeus, which are worth 200 coins for 5 on a line. Next comes the warrior with a spear woman (Freya?) and Thor. The shield, winged helmet, goblet and spear make up the smaller wins. There are no playing card symbols used for this game.
As well as being the best paying symbol, Loki is the wild. This will substitute for all of the regular symbols, though not the free spin or the bonus symbol. There are enough wilds to regularly make up the smaller wins.
3+ free spins symbol trigger the free spins bonus round, while the bonus symbol takes you to the pick-em game on a break-out screen.
The Legend of Olympus Bonus Games
When you hit the free spins game the opening sequence is entertaining. Zeus will fire lightning at Loki from the top of the screen, making him jump out of his place. A number will then float upwards which shows how many free spins you’ll get. You then quickly spin through, with your total wins (along with total from the game which kicked off the spins) displayed on a separate view before you return to the main game.
The other bonus is a two-stage pick-em game. First you click on 3 gold coins – which are displayed in front of the boatman (death). Your objective is to hit 2 which say ‘win’. If you do the boatman beckons and takes you to a cave where you see 3 chests. You control a key and choose one to reveal a prize. The graphics are great during this game, though it is not the most interactive bonus round compared to many slots.
The Legend of Olympus – Conclusion
3D Graphics are the main reason to check out this slot. The small details manage to take it from good to great in this respect. Loki rubbing his hands behind the spin button, Zeus stroking his beard when you win and Thor smashing his hammer in a burst of flames are all worth looking out for.
Compared to many games with this theme, Legends of Olympus is lower volatility. There are plenty of smaller wins while waiting for the bonuses to come in. When they do arrive, the graphics and animations are again worth looking out for.
All-in-all this is a really well put together slot. If you're a fan of games like Zeus by WMS or Cleopatra II by IGT, then I recommend that you check it out for yourself soon.
