Wynn Resorts has revealed it is the first operator to receive a casino license in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Las Vegas-based company announced Friday that it got approval from the General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA). It is already constructing a luxury resort in Ras Al Khaimah, 65 miles from Dubai, that is set to open in early 2027.
In a press release, Wynn Resorts said it looks forward to “being a key partner in the development of its tourism economy” and thanked the GCGRA for putting its confidence in the company.
a big move for the region as Islamic law prohibits gambling
This is a big move for the region as Islamic law prohibits gambling, and lawmakers in the UAE have denied over the years they would consider easing restrictions. That changed in September 2023 with the creation of the gambling regulator, and the GCGRA issued its first lottery license in July, giving The Game LLC approval to offer lottery games.
MGM Resorts International is hot on the heels of Wynn Resorts, submitting a license application last month. MGM CEO Bill Hornbuckle hopes to get the all-clear to develop a casino in Abu Dhabi.
