After facing sports betting violations when enrolled at Iowa State, University of Kansas tight end DeShawn Hanika has partnered with Integrity Compliance 360 (IC360) to educate student-athletes on where he went wrong—and how they can avoid the same mistakes.
Hanika missed the 2023 season, facing accusations of placing 288 bets in violation of NCAA policies. Seventy of those bets were on Iowa State basketball games. The bets were on sports other than the football that Hanika plays, but unfortunately, the NCAA prohibits athletes from wagering on any and all sports. The governing body views placing bets on one’s own university in a harsher light.
my wake-up call can be a crucial educational moment to help others understand what’s at stake”
In a press release, Hanika said: “This partnership with IC360 is a chance to turn my experience into a valuable lesson for others. Some student-athletes might believe that betting on separate sports poses no risk, but my wake-up call can be a crucial educational moment to help others understand what’s at stake and prevent similar pitfalls. I appreciate IC360 for giving me the platform to spread my message and contribute to positive change.”
Through his partnership with IC360, Hanika has committed to video content and in-person speaking engagements to share his story with both student-athletes and college administrators.
In a press release, Mark Potter, co-managing director of education and training at IC360 said: “DeShawn’s willingness to share his experience and articulate the impact his wagering investigation has had and continues to have on his career, relationships and well-being will provide a current and unique example to NCAA athletes across the collegiate landscape.”
