Legal sports betting has been spreading across the US since the end of the federal ban in May 2018. Now, more than 30 states have commercial sportsbooks up and running, and wagering handle has just surpassed $250bn in the post-Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) era.
New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Ohio, and Illinois all have had single months of $1bn+ handle
New Jersey is the state with the highest handle to date, taking in almost $39.5bn in bets and accounting for around 16% of the total figure. Nevada and New York round off the top three in the current rankings through June. New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Ohio, and Illinois all have had single months of $1bn+ handle.
Americans have spent more than $59bn betting so far in 2023, already higher than all of 2021. The figures are on track to bypass the $100bn mark for the full year, especially as more states go live, such as Kentucky, and the NFL season kicks off.
