With three coveted downstate New York casino licenses up for grabs, developers are doing anything they can to get an edge. Some of these companies have even gone as far as providing funding for children’s sports, which has caused an outcry among some parents.
Las Vegas Sands sponsored a practice session for youth soccer teams in Long Island
A children’s basketball summer camp in Coney Island had uniforms showcasing “The Coney” logo, which is the name of the proposed casino project in the area. Las Vegas Sands sponsored a practice session for youth soccer teams in Long Island which featured legendary players like David Beckham.
Some parents took to social media to complain about their children being a part of efforts to promote gambling. Others took a different stance and showed gratitude for the funding.
New York has a rule in place that prohibits casino companies from targeting or depicting minors in ads, but the sponsoring of youth sports events reportedly falls into a gray area. A rule change is currently pending in the state that would prevent gambling-related logos from appearing on clothing that is “intended primarily for people under 21.”
Developers are trying to win support in communities, due to part of the license selection process considering at how much locals are embracing the respective project proposals.
