The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has fined online casino operator Apollo Entertainment CA$100,000 (US$74,339) for responsible gambling rules violations. One of the biggest issues was Apollo failing to intervene when a customer lost CA$2m (US$1.5m) in less than four months.

Its self-exclusion program was also not up to scratch and there weren’t enough tools available to users to set time and financial-based limits on their accounts. The AGCO found that Apollo employees did not properly understand how vital responsible gambling policies are in helping protect vulnerable gamblers.

Apollo started operating in the Ontario market in September 2022 after receiving an iGaming license.

The regulator acknowledged that the operator has taken major steps to improve its processes and an appeal process is available. Speaking about the matter, AGCO Registrar and CEO Tom Mungham said that all licensees have to “proactively monitor patron play for signs of high-risk gambling” and intervene when necessary.
