A former employee at the home appliance company Hisense, who embezzled more than AU$3.3m (US$2.2m) over the course of eight years to feed her addiction to gambling, has pled guilty to eight counts of obtaining a financial advantage by deception.

Working as a customer service manager for the Chinese company in Victoria, Australia, Aphrodite Myron manipulated the customer complaint claims process to divert funds to herself. The 58-year-old submitted false upheld complaints to the company’s finance director and funneled cash to 35 different bank accounts controlled by her and her family.
In the Victorian County Court, Judge Nola Karapanagiotidis noted the hardworking nature of the woman while also labeling her behavior a major breach of trust that accumulated to a significant sum. Myron will face sentencing at a later date after pleading guilty.
Myron’s lawyer argued that gambling offered a form of escape from a difficult relationship with her spouse and the responsibility of taking care of her mother and children.
