was targeting a specific victim who was not there”
Brown County Sheriff Lieutenant Kevin Pawlak said that it does not look like this was a random attack. During a news conference on Sunday, he said the gunman “was targeting a specific victim who was not there, but he decided to still shoot some of the victim’s friends or co-workers, it appears.”
Police quickly got to the scene and ultimately shot and killed the gunman. The authorities have not yet named the victims or the perpetrator, but they reportedly will do so on Monday morning. The person who suffered injuries went to a hospital in Milwaukee for treatment. No law enforcement officers were injured and the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation is heading up the investigation into the incident.
Tribal leaders in shock
The Oneida Nation operates the casino and tribal leaders were in shock after the incident. Oneida Nation Chairman Tehassi Hill spoke to local media, saying that it was “scary” and that he was still in “disbelief.”
Hill also noted that firearms are not permitted on the tribe’s properties. While he believes that the current level of security is good at the casino, he said that the tribe will conduct a review and investigators may have recommendations to further bolster measures. The tribe tweeted out a statement on Sunday about the incident:
The gunfire caused mass panic among those who were at the property. One witness said that he definitely heard 20 to 30 gunshots and that people starting running towards the highway. He saw about 50 police cars arrive at the scene.
Sheriff Lieutenant Pawlak spoke about how a “tactical alert” was signaled after they heard about the active shooter. This meant that all law enforcement agencies from the surrounding area went to the casino.
