Global travel restrictions cited

The Global Gaming Expo (G2E) scheduled for October 5-8 has been canceled, the American Gaming Association (AGA) announced Wednesday in a joint press release with partner Reed Exhibitions. The event will now take place October 4-7, 2021 at the Sands Expo and Convention Center.

In a tweet, G2E event organizers said uncertainty around global travel restrictions was the main reason for the cancellation, adding that “virtual opportunities” will be made available:

Acknowledging that worldwide travel constraints influenced the decision, the AGA also expressed concern over “currently unknown guidance on large public gatherings this fall”.

Uncertain marketplace climate

Fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic wasn’t the only reason given for the change of plans. In the joint press release, AGA president and CEO Bill Miller cited “continued uncertainty around a viable marketplace at a physical G2E show” as another factor.

National, state, and local public health authorities, in addition to exhibitors and buyers, were consulted ahead of the decision to cancel, said Hervé Sedky, Reed Exhibitions Americas president in the announcement.

“Ultimately, it became clear that proceeding with an in-person gathering simply was not feasible,” Sedky said. The Reed Exhibitions Americas president added that his organization had made a commitment to use G2E’s platform to “continue to deliver unparalleled education content, inspiring collaboration, and innovative ideas.”

Promises of virtual G2E events

G2E is attended by approximately 30,000 people every year, including the world’s leading casino operators and sports betting companies. Not going ahead with the 2020 edition was “the prudent decision ahead of critical deadlines for exhibitors planning to participate,” said Miller.

While this is the first time the event has been called off in 20 years, organizers are promising a series of virtual events for 2020. The G2E team will be providing more information in the coming weeks.

American gaming industry adapting

Miller ended on a positive note, saying: “As the country works to reopen, the American gaming industry continues to adapt and provide the safest possible experience for our employees and customers.”

“We look forward to the moment when we can convene together again […] and celebrate the resilience that our industry is known for,” he concluded.

G2E attracts the USA’s largest gathering of global commercial and tribal gaming professionals. As a prime industry networking event, it showcases breakthroughs in gaming technology, such as Konami Gaming’s Silent Hill slot machine at G2E 2019, and educational content. The 2020 event was expected to bring together key industry partners, including the Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers, casino executives, and sports betting companies, in addition to financial technologists and digital transactions specialists.
