Robbery occurs shortly after reopening
The robbery of the casino took place not long after New York-New York reopened. Nevada casinos closed in mid-March by state order because of the coronavirus pandemic. Governor Steve Sisolak began easing restrictions in May, announcing that casinos could reopen on June 4.
Gaming companies have reopened their properties in phases. On the Las Vegas Strip, MGM Resorts International started with New York-New York, Bellagio, and MGM Grand a week ago. Excalibur is reopening today. MGM also just announced that it plans to reopen Luxor, ARIA, and Mandalay Bay by July 1.
The New York-New York Casino had been open for just seven days before the robbery occurred.
