Faces larceny counts

A former tech employee at the MGM Springfield Casino in Massachusetts has been charged with stealing $22,000. The worker in question is Salvador Montalvo Jr., who was employed at the casino from August 2018 to January 2019.

The way in which he allegedly stole the money was based on the fact that real money is used when testing the slot machines. Allegedly Montalvo would get the funds from the casino to test the machines and simply not return all the money when the testing was complete. He would bring back only a small sum to try to avoid suspicion.

Montalvo is facing a number of different charges, including larceny of property greater than $1,200. There are also charges related to making false entries into the facility’s corporate books.

Investigation began in January

The Gaming Enforcement Division began the investigation in January by auditing the performance of the slot machines, which showed that there were discrepancies.

According to investigators, Montalvo took a total of $23,940 from the casino’s cashier but returned only about $2,000. He allegedly put the rest of the funds into his personal bank account.

When the money is withdrawn from the cashier, the signature of a supervisor is required. Montalvo allegedly forged the signatures of his superiors on these forms.

MGM Springfield crime cases to date

The MGM Springfield, which opened in August 2018, was the first resort casino in Massachusetts. A number of controversial incidents have been reported since. There have been cases of underage gambling at the facility, largely due to the casino floor being so accessible to the other areas of the resort. This led to the casino being fined $100,000 by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.

There has also been a significant increase in crime rates in the region since the casino opened. Between September and December, 208 incidents were reported, resulting in 120 arrests. This compares to 115 incidents at the Plainridge Park Casino in Massachusetts in all of 2018.
