Top Speed Slots
No prizes for guessing what Top Speed is all about, but prizes aplenty for being first past the checkered flag in this high-octane game. If you’re expecting screeching tyres, beeping horns, gear shifts and roaring crowds from the get-go, you’ll be in for a disappointment. Spin the reels and all you’ll hear is a subtle click as they drop into line.
When you do record a win of any kind, however, you’ll finally be rewarded, not only with money, but with the roar of a highly tuned engine. Hallelujah.
Top Speed is a 5-reel slot from Cozy Games, one that adheres to their usual winning formula. This means clean and attractive graphics, cool animations and not much else. Cozy Games aren’t fans of in-game bonus features; scatter and wild wins are normally all you’re going to get.
Still, many players like this approach, not least because it allows them to do little more than spin the reels while multi-tasking like mad on other screens or in real life. Whether it’s because you’re playing multiple slots simultaneously or simply trying to feed the baby, a pure spin-and-win game can be extremely helpful. That said, Top Speed does include an optional Gamble feature in place of scatter and wilds – one we’ll get to shortly.
Rev Those Reels
Cozy Games have elected for a clean and minimalist design with Top Speed, with a black background adorned with little more than a faint swoosh. The logo, placed against a gear shifter display, mimics the sort of style you’d expect to find in an arcade racer game.
Before you spin the reels and get up to speed, it’s worth taking a moment to inspect the playing controls at the bottom of the screen. The first control, on the bottom left, allows the number of coins to be adjusted between 1 and 3.
The next control allows you to set the number of active pay lines, which range from 1 to 5. It’s unusual for a 5-reel game to only have 5 pay lines, but that’s how Cozy Games have elected to play this one.
The coin value can be set from 0.01 to 0.50, meaning that the maximum amount you can bet per spin is 7.50. To the bottom right of the screen are the buttons for Bet Max, Auto Spin and Spin. Click on Auto Spin and a pop-up menu will allow you to tweak an array of options. These include the ability to set the number of auto spins as low as 10 to as high as 100, and also an option for implementing a session loss limit. This can be set at 15x your bet, 50 x your bet, or at a custom value of your choice. Finally, there’s an option to specify a session single win limit such as 20x or 75x your bet.
Stick or Twist?
While Top Speed doesn’t have a bonus game as such, what it does have instead is a Gamble feature. Any time you notch a win on the reels, an orange button marked Gamble will appear at the bottom of the screen. Click on it and you’ll be taken through to a gamble round where you’re tasked with betting on the colour of the next playing card that’s produced: black or red.
Alternatively, you can bet on the suit of the next card: clubs, spades, hearts or diamonds. Guessing the correct colour will double your win, while guessing the correct suit will quadruple it. If you’re wrong, you’ll lose your win and have to start again on the reels.
Top Symbols for Top Wins
Unusually, Top Speed doesn’t have scatter, wild or bonus symbols. All you have to play with are the regular playing symbols, with the Gamble feature providing your gateway to bigger wins. The top value symbols in the game are the red racing helmet, 5 of which are worth 400, and the checkered flag, 5 of which are worth 2,000. Thereafter, it’s a case of activating the Gamble feature if you’re feeling bold, or simply collecting your winnings if you’re playing cautiously.
Top Speed isn’t a high stakes game, that’s for sure. For players looking to have some fun without burning through their cash too fast, the game is ideal. You can put in a decent amount of time on the reels, notching up small wins in the process to prolong your adventure.
It may not hit the giddy, adrenaline-fuelled heights it promises, but as a fun and low-risk game, Top Speed does just fine.
