Heaven and Hell Slot Machine
Some casino developers move heaven and earth to satisfy slot players, and the OpenBet platform is no different. Their 5-reel Heaven and Hell slot is a veritable hoot. Pitting gods and angels against demons and dragons, the movie-style casino game is characterised by excellent graphics, entertaining gameplay and handsome pay-outs.
The title, which was released way back in 2006, features 9 unfixed paylines, 34 winning combinations and a grand jackpot of 100 coins. And though there are no scatter symbols or free spins up for grabs, the bonus round and progressive jackpots should be enough to lure you in. The question is, will your path lead you to heaven or hell?
Buying into the Game
To its credit, Heaven and Hell features a wide betting range. For instance, you can stake as little as 0.25, or as much as 10 credits per line. Of course, your total win depends on the total stake, so the more you bet, and the more lines you activate, the greater your win will be. Something to bear in mind as you set your wager at the start of play. Something else to bear in mind: the game pays in all directions.
Screaming Demons
The Heaven and Hell slot takes place on a 5x3 reel grid which is divided evenly between ‘good’ and ‘evil’ figures. Even the backdrop is divided, with an ornate column on the left, topped by a white lion, representative of the pearly gates; and on the right, a frightening chamber daubed with a pentagram and topped by an ominous skull. Use the control panel at the bottom to spin the reels, bet at maximum, regulate lines and stakes and activate auto play: you can play as many as 25 automatic spins at a time.
As for the symbols themselves, there are ten, which is about standard for a 5-reel game. They include eight regular icons and two special symbols. The regular icons include four playing cards, including a Jack, a Queen, a King and an Ace. The former two belong to the dark side, appearing in black and red writing, while the latter two are illustrated to resemble the stained-glass windows of a church. The other regular symbols include a red, horned devil, a unicorn, a roaring dragon and a white pyramid. The latter is the most lucrative in the game, paying x25 for three, x50 for four and x100 – plus the progressive jackpot – for five in a line.
The red devil is next best, awarding x20 for three, x30 for four and x50 for five. The unicorn pays x10, x20 and x40, while the roaring dragon pays x5, x15 and x30. At the lower end of the scale, the Jack pays just x1, x2 and x5, while the Queen pays x2, x3 and x10. The stained-glass King awards x3, x5 and x15 and the Ace grants x4, x10 and x20.
Heaven and Hell also features a wild icon in the form of a Vitruvian Man, which can bolster your chances of forming a winning combination. Simply use this roving image as a surrogate to make combinations of three, four or five matching icons.
As far as animations are concerned, the game is nothing special: a mystical little jingle plays when you manage a win, but that’s about all you can expect. The symbols slide into place with a thump when the reels come to a halt. Given that the symbols are quite freaky, we were hoping for the Grim Reaper to swing his scythe or the unicorn to gallop into battle against the dragon. In mitigation, the slot was rolled out in 2006!
Choosing Gateways
Three or more hooded Grim Reaper figures triggers the special feature mini-game. In it, you’ll be shown three doorways, below which are multipliers: x0, x5, x25, x100 and x250. You must choose a doorway; if you guess correct, you’ll be given a corresponding multiplier, shown four more and given another opportunity to win a prize. Then you’ll be shown five doors, and so on…
If you guess wrong at the outset, you’ll return to the base game, but if you guess wrong in round two you’ll be returned to round one for another chance to progress.
Hellish or Heavenly?
Heaven and Hell is a solid slot game about one of the oldest stories in existence: good vs evil. With a progressive jackpot to be won, and a dedicated bonus game, the game provides plenty of juice for eager players.
