Rubik's Riches Slots
Rubik’s Riches is a unique, 3-dimensional casino slot from Ash Gaming. Unlike traditional slots, the game does not feature spinning reels. Instead – and the clue’s in the title – the action is played out on a Rubik’s Cube, which continually spins combinations of coloured squares. The objective of the game, as with a regular Rubik’s Cube, is to get as many lines or faces of the cube as possible. In this way, the title is similar to the Jenga slot, in that it reflects the game that it’s based on.
If you can solve a Rubik’s Cube in two minutes flat, well, that’s all well and good but it won’t necessarily help you here – this is a casino game after all, and Lady Luck has the final say in whether you win or lose. One thing’s for sure, the game doesn’t skimp on features: there’s both a fun bonus round and free spins up for grabs. Though there aren’t traditional reels, you could say this is a 3-reel game in that there are three columns on which to find matching combinations. In terms of paylines, there are 18 in total and the jackpot is non-progressive.
The comeback of the Rubik’s Cube
The heyday of the Rubik’s Cube was in the 1980s (‘over three billion combinations but just one solution!’), although there’s been something of a revival in recent years, just as there’s been a revival of interest in ‘80s culture in general: films, books, music. Maybe it’s our destiny to always pine after the eras which have gone before. Anyway, Rubik’s Riches is a terrific concept for a slot game.
As for the look of the game, it’s very much old school. In the centre of the screen is the three-dimensional cube, behind which lies a plain old blue background. On the left hand-side, there’s a table showing the line pay-outs, and on the left an explanation of the bonus game and a tab showing face pay-outs. As for the controls, they’re housed in the usual place, along the bottom of the screen. There are buttons for Change Audio, Bet -, Bet +, Auto Play and Play. Simply press Play to spin the reels – or in this case, rejig the Rubik’s Cube.
Obviously there are no traditional symbols in Rubik’s Riches – the object of the game is to shuffle the cube and line up matching coloured squares. Should you complete correctly coloured faces enough times, you’ll scoop 5x, 20x and 100x your stake, respectively. The grand jackpot of 4,000x your stake is won when you win on all 18 lines, and an autoplay option lets you relax while the cube does its thing.
Rubik’s Riches is available to download, or you can elect to enjoy the instant-play online version. Unfortunately, there isn’t a bespoke mobile version at this time.
Rubik’s Riches bonus round
Of course, there’s a bit more to the game than just matching coloured squares. As mentioned, the aforementioned bonus game gives you the chance to peel off stickers and reveal free spins or extra cubes. The mini-game is activated at random. Just watch out for the letters of RUBIK’S lighting up at the top of the screen. You must continue peeling stickers from the cube until you unearth the one that says ‘start’.
In the event that you reveal a number of extra cubes, you’ll have even more chances to win. If free spins is what you get, the cube will spin automatically until your free spins run out. Incidentally, the bonus feature is able to re-trigger, giving you the chance to win yet more cubes or free spins.
Blast from the past
We really enjoyed playing Rubik’s Riches. While it takes some getting used to, it’s nice to break from the old routine once in a while – in life as in slots – and this fun, three-dimensional game is the perfect antidote when you get sick of traditional 3 and 5-reelers. While the gameplay is relatively simple, the title remains entertaining due to the fact that the bonus round can activate at any time. The bonus round can also be lucrative and, in our experience, doesn’t take very long to trigger. And while there’s nothing like the satisfaction of hitting a jackpot in a slot game, imagine that feeling coupled with the smugness derived from solving a Rubik’s Cube! It simply doesn’t get any better.
